POA&M

The POA&M: your confession list or your proof of control.

How strong programs run Plans of Action and Milestones — honest severity, real milestones, automated evidence, and burn-down AOs believe.

Assessments produce findings. The POA&M — Plan of Action and Milestones — is where findings go to be managed instead of hidden: each weakness with its risk, its fix, its owner, its money, and its date. AOs don't expect zero findings; they expect a POA&M that proves you're in control of them.

What separates strong POA&Ms

Honest severity. Downgrading findings to look clean is the fastest way to lose an AO's trust — and the classic tell of a program in trouble. Real milestones. 'Q4' is not a milestone; 'patched fleet-wide by 15 Oct, verified by scan 20 Oct, owner J. Smith' is. Movement. A POA&M whose dates slide quarterly is a risk register in costume. Burn-down velocity is the health metric that matters.

Make it automatic

Wire scanners to the tracker so findings arrive with evidence attached; wire remediation workflow so closure requires proof, not assertion; put the burn-down on a dashboard the AO can open unannounced. Programs that do this stop dreading assessments — the POA&M becomes their proof of competence rather than their confession list.
